During the meeting, the city council suspended the<br \/>\nbusiness license of the Springwood Hotel, located at 1002 Columbus Parkway in<br \/>\nOpelika, for six months. The business owner,&nbsp;Pravinbhai Patel, must bring his<br \/>\nhotel up to code and pass city building and fire inspections within the next<br \/>\nsix months to get his business license reinstated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The city council first heard appeals during its Sept. 3 meeting<br \/>\nto revoke the hotel\u2019s business license and demolish the property on the grounds<br \/>\nof multiple health and safety violations. At that time, the council gave the<br \/>\nhotel\u2019s owners and managers 30 days to hire an architect and structural<br \/>\nengineer to look into the alleged issues. Oct. 1 marked the end of that 30-day<br \/>\nperiod. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Alleged issues at the hotel included electrical code<br \/>\nviolations, fire code violations, structural violations, sewage under its<br \/>\nfloors, plumbing violations, standing water, holes in the flooring, mold, and<br \/>\nbed bugs. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Residents at the hotel were evacuated just a few days after<br \/>\nthe Sept 3 meeting. The hotel has since been closed for business. During the<br \/>\nOct. 1 city council session, Patel\u2019s attorney, Allen Sheehan, said the hotel is<br \/>\nstructurally sound and the city council would receive an architectural report<br \/>\nfor the property by the middle of the next week. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p>In other business:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The city council approved a downtown street closure for Red<br \/>\nClay Brewing Company for Oct. 17. Red Clay will host a bike night event that<br \/>\nday.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The council also approved a fireworks permit for First<br \/>\nBaptist Church of Opelika for its fall festival on Oct. 27. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A restaurant retail liquor and retail beer on premise<br \/>\nalcohol license was approved for Luv Zone.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A resolution was approved for a demolition cost and removal assessment<br \/>\nof $7,620 for a property located at 1300 Spring Drive in Opelika.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The council approved a contract to provide Habitat for<br \/>\nHumanity with $250,000 for fiscal year 2025. Those funds will go towards<br \/>\nbuilding three new homes in Opelika. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Appointments:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mayor Gary Fuller appointed Jacob Walker, III to the Opelika<br \/>\nHousing Authority. Walker\u2019s term will end Oct. 18, 2029.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The council reappointed Auzzie Comer to the Board of<br \/>\nAdjustments &amp; Appeals. Comer\u2019s term will end Oct. 1, 2028.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The council also reappointed Tim Moore to the Board of<br \/>\nAdjustments &amp; Appeals. His term will also end Oct. 1, 2028.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The council reappointed Dick Moreman Jr. to the Lee County<br \/>\nYouth Development Center Board.
